The acute and long-term outcomes of viral infections remain poorly understood. As highlighted by the recent pandemic, the impact of viral infections is far greater and more long-lived than originally appreciated, and outcomes depend greatly on the quality and magnitude of host immunity. Growing evidence, including from our own research, suggests that viral infections might play a role in chronic inflammatory diseases, a group of conditions comprising the world’s major causes of disability and death, encompassing autoimmune disorders. There is increasing evidence, including from my own research, that viral infections may contribute to chronic inflammatory diseases, conditions that collectively represent the world’s leading cause of disability and death and include autoimmune disorders. The differing outcomes of viral infections, the mechanisms that drive such outcomes and novel therapeutic approaches will be discussed.
