Abstract

This talk examines the role of taxation and “paradisi fiscali” in creating the extreme economic inequality growing worldwide. Before the pandemic, 26 men owned as much wealth as the 3.8 billion people who comprised the poorest 50% of people globally; by the end of 2021, the handful of ultra-rich had doubled their wealth, while the lower 99% were poorer. How has this happened? Can anything be done to stop it? These and related questions will be addressed by Sociology Professor Brooke Harrington; her award-winning research investigates the system of offshore financial centers that make it possible for the ultra-rich to escape not only taxation, but also laws concerning debt repayment, penalties imposed by the courts, trade embargoes, inheritance laws, and other limi.tations on the unchecked growth of wealth. This research stands at the intersection of economics and sociology and will be of interest to social scientists in a variety of disciplines
