Glass is a very common material today. However its invention and subsequent production marked a summit of ancient pyrotechnology, requiring the highest ever possible temperatures as well as a range of innovative techniques for shaping and decoration. Glass bottles of classic antiquity were very different from glass bottles of today. They were non-transparent, multicolored, relatively rare art objects. Their production relied on a system of long-distance trade combining natron from Egypt with colorants from other centers. Most likely they were containers for precious perfumed oils and cosmetic balsams rather than for drinkable liquids. In the distant land of Northern Black Sea these flacons expressed the persistence of Hellenistic cultural traditions in a new cultural and natural environment, as well as highlighted the relations between Greeks and indigenous groups such as mighty Scythians. The set of up-to-date methods enables us to propose a new comprehensive view of glass vessels distribution giving some tips on their social function and significance
