With the aging of populations worldwide, the focus has been on the importance of healthy aging and well-being and in health systems being responsive to meet population health needs and this equitably. This seminar will give a general background as to the epidemiology and the impact on the health care system of common mental disorders in community living older adults recruited in primary care practices. A brief reference to the Canadian health system performance measurement framework will be presented to summarize the dimensions related to access to high quality comprehensive & integrated health services. Findings from a longitudinal cohort study of primary care older adults will be presented on the following: Factors associated with profiles of mental and physical health status; the costs associated with receipt of adequate health care for depression & anxiety; perceived unmet mental health care needs.  A general discussion will follow on research to inform policy and methodological challenges in studying health outcomes in older adults from an international perspective.
