ABOUT US

The Framework Agreement for the establishment of Fraunhofer Innovation Platform on Waste Valorisation and Future Energy Supply at the University of Bologna (FIP-WE@UNIBO) has been signed on 1st April 2022 between Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna and Fraunhofer Gesellshaft.

The FIP-WE@UNIBO is located in Marina di Ravenna.

The FIP-WE@UNIBO will be run to the benefit of both Parties as a vehicle for:

  • R&D cooperation in the field of management of resources and waste, new materials, bioenergy, energy techniques, biochar certification, measurement and analytical techniques, Life Cycle Analysis, System Analysis; at a high technology readiness levels (up to TRL 6/7)
  • Facilitating and expediting the commercialization of research and the transfer and adoption of waste management technology by industry, in the framework of Circular Economy and for Green Engineering
  • Introducing Fraunhofer methods and standards for contract research to the research community in Italy and in particular focussing on training the next generation of engineers and technicians through joint research programs

Management

The FIP-WE@UNIBO Management consists of two members: A Director appointed by UNIBO (Prof. Andrea Contin) and a Director appointed by Fraunhofer UMSICHT-SURO (Dr.-Ing. Fabian Stenzel).

Supervisory Group

FIP-WE@UNIBO Management will seek advice from a joint Supervisory Group composed of equal members from each side, two from UNIBO (the Director of CIRI-FRAME Prof. Francesco Melino and the Vice-Rector for Research Prof. Alberto Credi) and two from Fraunhofer (Ms. Adelheid Adam from Fraunhofer Headquarters and Prof. Matthias Franke from Fraunhofer UMSICHT-SURO).

Advisory Council

The Advisory Council provides scientific feedback and strategic recommendations to FIP-WE@UNIBO. Members of the Advisory Council shall be invited and appointed by FIP-WE@UNIBO Management upon consultation with the Supervisory Group. It consists of three to six top experts in Waste Valorisation and Future Energy Supply, drawn from industry, academia and government to be selected within the first six months of FIP Operations.

Since 2013, a strong mutual knowledge and trust between the Environmental Management Research Group (EMRG) at the University of Bologna and the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, Sulzbach-Rosenberg Branch, grew up. Their collaboration is further strengthened through the establishment of the FIP-WE@UNIBO.
