Searching for Models of Intercultural Management of Social Conflict

Coordinated by Silvia Bagni, Marc Andrew Brightman, Annalisa Furia

«“United in diversity”, the motto of the European Union, first came into use in 2000. It signifies how Europeans have come together, in the form of the EU, to work for peace and prosperity, while at the same time being enriched by the continent’s many different cultures, traditions and languages» (EU website). “E Pluribus Unum” is written on the great seal of the United States. Besides, Europeans have long been emigrants all over the world, and the great American Nation has been built by emigrants.

However, neither Europeans nor Americans seems to believe in the idea that the differences between us enrich our common human nature and help us better understanding who we are; that the “me” makes sense only in relation with the “you”. They still continue to build walls, to close borders and ports.

The aim of this international and interdisciplinary laboratory on cultural diversity is twofold: first, filling a gap between the Academy and the public at large, we will try to bridge theoretical researches with concrete best practices and successful experiences of intercultural co-living in local contexts; secondly, we will be led by experts into a reflection on the meanings of interculturalism in law, humanities and social sciences.
