LABORATORY

X-RAY POWDER DIFFRACTION

XRPD is applied to the quantification of polymorphic forms

in pharmaceutical formulations

The instrument is provided in the Department by the Crystallography group

INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY - ATTENUATED TOTAL REFLECTION (IR-ATR)

ATR is applied to environmental sediments and solid samples (generally non-crystalline)

The instrument is provided in the Department by the Organic group

VOLTAMMETRY

A three-electrode voltammeter with a mercury-drop work electrode or solid electrodes.
Employed in stripping differential pulse stripping voltammetry mode (polarography).

Applications: identification and quantification of risky metals (mainly Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu) in natural matrices, but also anions and organic molecules.

The instrument is inside the Chemometrics Laboratory

ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROMETER (AAS)

AAS is applied to the determination of risky metals

in the environment, in plants, food and many other real matrices

The instrument is inside the Teaching Laboratory

HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATORGRAPHY (HPLC)

HPLC is applied to liquid pharmaceutical formulations

The instrument is inside the Teaching Laboratory

HEAD-SPACE FLASH GAS-CHROMATOGRAPHY (HS-Flash-GC)

Head-space Flash GC-FID is applied in untargeted mode to the volatile profile of food matrices

The scope is to assess traceability and authenticity of oil, honey, wine, spices, and many other foods

The instrument is provided by COOP Italia, in Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna)

RAMAN MICROSCOPY

Applied to honey and beeswax to assess traceability and authenticity

The instrument is provided by CREA, Bologna
