Body donation to science: the power of generosity

The experience of the University of Bologna in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Region

Body donation to science: the power of generosity
  • Date: 15 MAY 2025  from 9:00 to 13:00

  • Event location: Aula Magna "Santa Lucia", via Castiglione 36, Bologna

  • Type: Meetings and conferences

The event, conceived by the Anatomical Center of the University of Bologna in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Region, will be a moment of reflection on the ethical significance of body donation. It is an act of profound generosity with substantial and essential implications for medical training and, therefore, for patient safety and the health of the entire community.

Throughout the morning, the recent history of the Alma Mater regarding body donation will be revisited, and through the contributions of the key figures involved, the journey that led to the approval in 2020 of the first law regulating body donation to science on a national level will be outlined. This law also established the criteria for recognizing National Reference Centers.

The Anatomical Center has been accredited by the Ministry of Health from the beginning and has been a national reference center for the preservation and use of deceased bodies since 2021.

The Emilia-Romagna Region, in recognition of the excellence of our Center long before the approval of this legislation, was chosen by the Ministry of Health as the leading region for the design and implementation of a national information and communication campaign on the meaning of donating one's body to science.

With the moderation of Francesca Fanuele, journalist from La7, we will hear from the key contributors, the words of a donor’s family member, and a special testimonial, Giorgio Chiellini, with whom we will address this ethically significant issue that, if not properly explained, continues to cause unease.

The event will also serve as the official launch of the national awareness campaign for body donation to science, promoted by the Emilia-Romagna Region in collaboration with the University of Bologna.
