POLSL - Politechnika Slaska

Faculty of Architecture is an educational and research unit of the Silesian University of Technology. It carries out projects and research in the fields of modern urban and spatial planning, theory and history of architecture, revitalization of municipal areas, restoration and conservation of historic buildings, as well as quality assessment and management of such buildings. Artistic projects include interior and furniture design, functional graphics, sculpture, painting and drawing. The Faculty enjoys strong support from local professionals. Among the academic staff there are successful practitioners, whose presence enlivens and benefits educational environment. The unit is entitled to award BSc, MSc and PhD academic degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning.
The Faculty has about 80 employees and approximately 500 students. It hosted numerous events and conferences including BIWA (Interdisciplinary Research in Architecture), RMW (Region-City-Country), ULAR (Urban Landscape Renewal) or TEDxSilesianUniversityofTechnology.

We have Erasmus partnerships with over 20 European architecture schools, including Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Fachhochschule Aachen, Chalmers University of Technology, Kopenhavens Tekniske Skole, Gazi University Ankara, Izmir Institute of Technology. The Faculty of Architecture is also a member of EAAE – European Association for Architectural Education and ECLAS – European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools. It also cooperates with organizations and institutions in many countries, e.g. with IAPS (International Association for People-Environment Studies), Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA) Furst-Puckler-Land in Germany, Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation in Italy, National Preservation of Cultural Heritage Old Halich in Ukraine.
Our students participate in international design workshops and, within the framework of ERASMUS program, they can study at 23 partner universities. The Faculty has fruitful collaboration with creative professional organizations, including, among others, Union of Polish Architects, Society of Polish Town Planners, Chamber of Polish Architects, Chamber of Polish Town Planners and local self-governments.

The Faculty of Architecture is situated in the campus of Silesian University of Technology, near the historic centre of Gliwice.

Tomasz Bradecki - lecturer and researcher in the Department of Urban Design and Spatial Planning. Assistant at the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology in the Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Planning, academic teacher and lecturer, permanently combines professional work with teaching, since 2016 the founder of the URBANMODEL research group www.urbanmodel.org, dealing with models of residence. Author and co-author of several books and many scientific articles in the field of urban design and architecture in Polish and English, creator of a series of workshops for children and youth in the series ‘Let’s Build Together’, Speaker at 4 Design Days in Katowice: www.4dd.pl

In 2015 Tomasz Bradecki in the group of the best architects of 40 according to the propertydesign.pl magazine, in 2017 a member of the HOMEZONE nomination committee. Designer of many houses and public buildings projects, passionate for urban design, architecture and sports including climbing. Earlier design practice in Germany and United Kingdom.

His fields of interest include: urban design for housing estates, urban indicators in urban design and spatial planning and 3d mapping, parametric evaluation of urban environment. The author has published already numerous papers in his field of interest. The milestone in his research was the parametric evaluation of nearly 50 housing estates built recently (2003-2013) in the Silesian region, published in a book with Agata Twardoch, PhD. Author also published similar research with 30 case studies across Poland (2019) as editor and co-author. Leader of several CEEPUS summer school grants, and international ERASMUS+ KA2 action grant as co-operating university (project ARCHEA, 2018-2021.  Tomasz Bradecki is also a practicing architect and urban designer, author of many projects for single-family houses and housing estates. He is a member of the Polish Chamber of Architects with professional experience in Poland, Germany and Great Britain.

Michał Stangel - urbanist, professor and vice-dean for research at the Faculty of Architecture, Silesian University of Technology. Previously worked for EDAW in London (on London 2012 Olympics masterplan, Nassau regeneration and Dubai Waterfront). Received Bauhaus Dessau Foundation scholarship; as Fulbright visiting researcher at MIT participated in the Zaragoza Digital Mile project. Principal designer for over 50 urban design projects – master planning, regeneration andpublic spaces. Received 30 prizes in design competitions (including winning Krakow Nowa Huta of the Future) as well as the ministerial award for excellence in urban planning (for a former military site redevelopment masterplan).

Interested in urban design, public spaces and combining education, research and practice in the methodology of Project Based Learning. Member of the Council of Polish Society of Urban planners and the national Main Urban Planning Committee. Krzysztof Kafka, assistant professor on the Faculty of Architecture on SUT in Gliwice (Poland), Department of Urban and Spatial Planning. Practicing scientist in a field of Spatial planning and Spatial development on local and regional scale. His work focuses on the problems of organizing the systems od spatial planning in local scales. His interests are based on the problems of the partakers in the planning system, and the roles they are playing. He isalso a member of the local and regional commissions of architecture and urban planning in Upper Silesian Region - advisory bodies. The former President of the Society of The Urban Planner in southern and eastern Poland.  

Katarzyna Ujma-Wasowicz (born 1965), a Polish architect and urban planner. Researcher and lecturer, Professor of Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice.
Her main research interests are: innovation in the development of contemporary architecture and city space; insertion of human factors and ergonomics issues in architectural projects; popularization of thinking about architectural environment issues for disabled people (especially for the blind). International and intra national research experience: presentation of research in articles, conducting the sessions or participation during many international conferences and seminars (i.a. USA., China, Greece, Portugal, Germany) and national ones.

She is a designer and practitioner, the owner of small architectural studio and she is also a President of Silesian (regional) Branch of Society of Polish Town Planners and a member of Polish Ergonomics Association.

Agata Twardoch PhD, Eng. Arch. Architect and urban planner, assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology, member of the TUP (Polish Urbanist Association). She co-runs design studio (www.44STO.pl) . Her main field of scientific interest is affordable housing and alternative forms of residence. She conducts research, open lectures and design workshops. She writes for architectural magazines, designs public spaces, architecture and interiors.
