A piece of the Alma Mater community is among the key players reshaping the future of defense and security in Italy. Federico Ognibene, Alumnus of the University of Bologna and Co-founder of SunCubes, is a leading figure in the national Defence Tech sector, a field where academic research is transformed into a strategic asset for the community.

SunCubes was born with an ambitious mission: to eliminate the physical limits of electric charging through a wireless power transmission system via laser. Although the long-term vision looks toward energy infrastructure in space, the startup's immediate application holds fundamental value in the security and surveillance sector. Thanks to this technology, drones used for monitoring land or critical infrastructure can potentially stay airborne indefinitely, receiving energy remotely without ever needing to land. This is the concept of "perpetual flight," a revolution that increases surveillance efficiency and reduces operational risks in sensitive contexts.

Federico Ognibene’s journey represents the ability of Unibo Alumni to navigate frontier territories. His startup is not only a case of entrepreneurial success but an example of how the skills acquired at our University allow for tackling complex technological challenges, where mechanics and electronics meet the needs of global security.

Beyond defense, SunCubes' technology has the potential to transform environmental monitoring and precision agriculture, confirming how startups born from the vision of our Alumni are capable of generating a positive, far-reaching impact across multiple levels of society.
