The general approach of the project is aimed at strengthening community resilience through concrete actions in response to the crises generated especially by the context (water and energy insufficiency) and by exogenous factors (climate change). The project aims to achieve sustainable agriculture and food security through the use of new technologies in a logic of reuse and savings of water resources aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector, stimulating production diversification and market access for the products.

The 30-month project will operate in the Rafah region, with the aim of contributing to the restoration of the economic development of the agricultural sector in the Gaza Strip through new synergies between the research system and civil society organizations, promoting in particular the reuse of treated waste water for agricultural purposes and high water efficiency systems to improve the resilience of the agricultural sector of Gaza through the contribution of innovative and sustainable technologies.

One year after the start of the project "Reuse of wastewater treated for agricultural purposes in the district of Al-Mawasi - Rafah Governorate - Gaza Strip" funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, the five farmers selected as beneficiaries of the hydroponic agriculture pilot project have begun to see practical results. Selected according to their skills and abilities, the five recipients have witnessed the rehabilitation and conversion of part of their greenhouses (about 250 square meters) to hydroponic cultivation.

The work involved: the installation of a rainwater collection system, the construction of eight perforated pipe modules for water recycling and the installation of two tanks for the collection and reuse of the nutrient solution for the plants. Moreover, given the low availability of daily energy, it was necessary to build a small photovoltaic system to guarantee a constant supply of electricity.
