As part of its internationalization strategy, the University of Bologna pays particular attention to international development cooperation, promoting and participating in numerous initiatives in collaboration with the various players in the sector. To enhance the involvement of students in activities connected to global citizenship, the 2019/2020 Call for the Field Work project, a practical learning opportunity in emerging and developing countries, has been presented at the University on October 7, 2019.
In an increasingly interconnected global society, it becomes essential to offer students new opportunities to develop or strengthen their ability to interpret the main phenomena of the world around them. With this intention the Field Work program was born, an opportunity for international mobility destined for the students of the University of Bologna and focused on the theme of international development cooperation.
The initiative - promoted by the Alma Mater together with the Network of NGOs from Emilia-Romagna (COONGER) and other NGOs - allows students to spend a period abroad, from two to six months, in developing and emerging countries at NGOs (non-governmental organizations) or other bodies active in development cooperation, carrying out activities "on the field" useful for a valuable exchange of experiences and knowledge.
The innovative learning experience, recognized in the curriculum, allows students to carry out a training period or prepare their degree thesis in an intercultural context, and thus deepen their disciplinary studies by applying them to the contexts of the so-called Global South. Numerous NGOs from the CONGER network and other NGOs participate in the Field Work program, offering opportunities in the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
After the pilot phase successfully concluded in the academic year 2018/2019, the Field Work program is proposed again in the 2019/2020 edition thanks to the collaboration with the Network of NGOs from Emilia-Romagna (COONGER) and other NGOs and bodies active in development cooperation.
On October 7, 2019, at 9.30 am, the program has been presented at the University and Development Cooperation: from decentralized cooperation to international mobility with a view to global citizenship Round table, dedicated to the current and potential contribution of the University to development cooperation in collaboration with local actors.
