Methodology

The project will be dedicated to the collection and publication in the KIParla corpus of two different types of oral data, namely semi-structured interviews and completely spontaneous interactions. In particular, the ParlaBO module consists of semi-structured interviews, while KIPasti is focused on spontaneous kitchen-table conversations.

The new modules Stra-ParlaBO and Stra-ParlaTO will include both types of oral data of SIMB (see Background), i.e., semi-structured interviews and completely spontaneous interactions, to mirror the sociolinguistic variation attested in the other modules of the KIParla corpus. Crucially, eliciting SIMB data with the same tools used for “native” speaker will enable the creation of a resource that is different from existing learners’ corpora of Italian.

The semi-structured interviews will be conducted on the basis of a set of questions which will stimulate discussions on crucial topics for individuals with a migration background. As for the spontaneous conversations, the most suitable settings will be identified together with the interlocutors that will be recorded, ideally involving meals.

Four linguistic communities relevant in each urban environment will be selected, to identify the persons, groups and institutions to be involved in the co-design of data collection. Groups will be identified on the updated reports on immigration provided by local Institutions and ISTAT.

The new modules will contain ca. 50h of recordings, that will be transcribed and pseudonymized.
