Monitoring Techniques for Road Infrastructure Maintenance

Sensor‑based assessment, physical condition of pavements

In our Monitoring Techniques for Road Infrastructure Maintenance research strand, we develop and deploy sensor‑based methods to assess the physical condition of pavements and critical infrastructure elements. By outfitting instrumented bicycles with high‑resolution surface measurement tools, we capture data on pavement texture and roughness that support quantitative evaluation of road surface deterioration over time. This line of research is embedded in both national and EU‑funded programmes (including PRIN projects), where sensor data inform models of infrastructure degradation and prioritise maintenance interventions. The combination of real‑world data collection and advanced analytical techniques enhances predictive maintenance frameworks, reducing lifecycle costs and contributing to safer, longer‑lasting road networks.
