The WET project was featured in the round table “Alternative Propellants and Air-Breathing Applications”, one of five expert discussions held during the 2025 International Electrodeless Plasma Thruster (EPT) Workshop in Madrid. The event gathered leading researchers and stakeholders in the field of electric and electrodeless propulsion to discuss emerging technologies and future directions for sustainable space transportation.
Fabrizio Ponti (University of Bologna) presented ongoing research activities focused on the use of alternative propellants for future electric propulsion systems. The presentation highlighted both the opportunities and the challenges associated with adopting alternative propellants as sustainable alternatives to conventional propellants.
During the discussion, participants explored the technological implications of employing alternative propellants, including plasma chemistry, component compatibility, facility adaptation, and the integration within future spacecraft architectures. The conversation also highlighted the importance of combining theoretical modelling, experimental validation, and diagnostic development to accelerate the maturation of water-based propulsion technologies.
The round table provided an excellent opportunity to disseminate the objectives of WET and to engage with the international electric propulsion community.
