Solvang 5

SHORT DESCRIPTION: based in Oslo (Norway), Solvang 5 is part of the Allotment Gardens of Oslo (9 in total) which are parts of Norway’s Allotment Association. They were first built back in 1909 with 132 allotments, in 1915 they were reduced to 65 allotments, then razed in 1933 and abandoned until 1957 when they were rebuilt again. Solvang 5 contributes to a better life quality and a better childhood for children growing up in urban environment. The allotments are supposed to be easily available and act as “green lungs”, they represent an important resource for the city and the local environment. Solvang 5 contains both private allotments and a community garden. 

 

KEY ACTIVITIES: Solvang 5, like all other allotments, are managed in an ecological and environmentally sustainable way in order to contribute to the biodiversity, the welfare and to create more green spaces. In addition, the place aims to create cohesion between the people in the community and find solutions regarding the prevention and exploitations of land in the city. At Solvang 5 there are spring and annual meeting in which the members are dealing with typical situations like building regulations and rules of the law. Occasionally there are activities for the joint members which includes parties, workshops and courses regarding the use of solar energy and how to prepare a good soil for cultivation purposes starting from food and plant waste. Solvang 5 gardens are also allowing other activities like the training of Norwegian’s rescue dogs inside the area of the allotment.
