SHORT DESCRIPTION: PELLEROSSA is the first sustainable tomato from Emilia-Romagna; it is grown in Budrio, in the province of Bologna, with agronomic techniques that respect the environment.
It is eco-sustainable because it grows in a clod of earth wrapped with coconut fibre, in a high, solid and bright greenhouse. The idea of Agribologna cooperative and the iPom company combines new technologies with agricultural production, aiming at environmental sustainability of the entire production chain.
KEY ACTIVITIES: the greenhouse is spread over 10,000 square meters entirely powered by renewable energy. Winter heating is provided by the thermal energy produced by the plants fed by raw materials like corn and cereals; defense, fertilization and irrigation are natural, and the water is totally recovered and put back into circulation. The greenhouse produces four varieties of tomatoes: grappolo, piccadilly, cherry and date tomatoes.
RELEVANT DIMENSION: tomatoes, hi-tech, biogas.
BUSINESS MODELS: Cost reduction.
