Floating Farm

SHORT DESCRIPTION: The Floating Farm is in the port of Rotterdam. It is built on water to allow a more efficient use of soil; it is as well close to the city, so that citizens can engage in food production. Moreover, thanks to this location, the distribution and logistics of food from the countryside to the urban area is more functional in order to reduce pollution. The farm produces dairy products, in particular cow milk, using animal-friendly and sustainable methods, together with the newest technologies.

KEY ACTIVITIES: The floating farm works with a circular production system which involves nutrients, energy and water. Everything is studied to be animal and eco-friendly. The platform is stable, so cows can move on it freely. The animals don't need to be always on the pasture and can spend a lot of time elsewhere. Grazing in the pasture is left completely to the cows’ discretion, so they can choose what it is most comfortable to them. The grass produced on the floating platform is used to feed cows in addition to residual commodities from the city.

Moreover, on the platform, there is an education hub where students and people in the business circuit learn about innovative techniques and urban agriculture.

RELEVANT DIMENSION: innovative, floating, high-tech technology level.

BUSINESS MODEL: Experimental.
