Espai Germanetes

SHORT DESCRIPTION: the area of the ex-Convent of the Germanetes dels Pobres in Barcelona, since 2006 is owned by the municipal authority with the idea that it could be the right place to accommodate a series of public services long requested by the district. It is a meeting point for the community which is involved in the sustainable design of the city, both from a social and environmental point of view. The Espai Germanetes is an observatory that calls for a reversal of the policies of privatization of public spaces and for rethink the urban design focusing on men and women needs. A project born from the desire to regain the right to the city. 

 

KEY ACTIVITIES: the activities of the Espai Germanetes are organized collectively during the weekly public meetings. The spaces are open to proposals of citizenship provided that they are addressed to all and free of charge, must not be partisan or religious in nature, and must be removed any kind of inequality. The space includes: a common kitchen, designed and built all together, with the aim of raising awareness of food sovereignty; the common garden, absolutely not parcelled, but cared for in a shared way and whose products are consumed in popular meals. Finally, given the lack of space for sports in the city, there is also a wall for climbing.
