My name is Hossein Jafari, and I am a master's student in Electrical Energy Engineering at the University of Bologna, looking forward to graduating in 2027. Originally from Iran, where I completed my bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, my current academic focus revolves around power systems, electric vehicles, renewable energy optimization, and Battery Management Systems (BMS). Moving to a new country for higher education is always a major life milestone, but taking on the role of a Student Ambassador has allowed me to turn this personal journey into a shared experience.
When it came to choosing a destination for my master's degree, Italy felt like a remarkably natural choice. The warmth, kindness, and hospitality of the Italian people closely mirror the culture I grew up with in Iran. This beautiful cultural similarity made the transition feel less like moving abroad and more like finding a second home. The University of Bologna, with its prestige as the oldest university in the Western world, offered unparalleled opportunities for academic and professional growth alongside highly skilled professors. However, on a more personal note, my decision was heavily influenced by my absolute love for the automotive world. Being in the heart of the Motor Valley, surrounded by the legendary legacy of giants like Ferrari and Lamborghini, was a dream come true for an engineering student like me. I am a huge motorsport enthusiast. I actually watch Formula 1 almost every day! The chance to study in a region that breathes automotive excellence and cutting-edge engineering was simply irresistible and played a huge role in bringing me to Italy.
Finding accommodation in Bologna can definitely be a challenge for newcomers. Because it is a historic city and many buildings in the center have beautifully preserved their traditional architecture, housing in the heart of the city is highly sought after. My biggest tip for future international students is to look for housing outside the city center (outside the historical "Centro" ring) or even in neighboring towns. While the commute might take a bit longer, it will save you a lot of money. It is a manageable challenge, so do not let it worry you too much! When I am not studying or working in the motorsport lab, I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle with my regular workout routines. However, I spend most of my free time hanging out with friends or volunteering, such as collaborating at the Bologna Marathon or in IRSS events. I love exploring new cities, tasting the unique local cuisines of different regions, and putting myself out there in new communities to meet fresh faces. I firmly believe that taking on volunteer work and trying new things (even if it means occasionally failing) teaches us invaluable lessons that build resilience and pave the way for our future success.
My academic experience so far has been incredibly rewarding. The professors here are deeply committed to their students and care immensely about the quality of education. Every class and project has been a valuable stepping stone in my academic journey. Beyond the classroom, joining the Unibo Motorsport team has been an absolute highlight. It is one of the most organized and inspiring teams I have ever seen. I work in the electric vehicle and Battery Management System (BMS) division, where many of my colleagues have become close friends. For instance, my wonderful friend Leo and I collaborate closely in the workshop on battery packs. He has been a great guide to Italian culture and even teaches me some Italian. We are currently preparing for the upcoming competitions, and we hope to make the University proud! I am also honored to collaborate with the International Relations Strategy Support team as a Student Ambassador. Being part of this group has given me unforgettable memories, working alongside amazing people!
I would wholeheartedly recommend the University of Bologna to any international student. Living and studying here is quite literally like walking through a living, breathing museum. My first piece of advice is to enjoy every single moment and make as many good friends as you can. Second, never be afraid of failure. Step out of your comfort zone, embrace challenges, and show the world your talents, because you are capable of extraordinary things! Finally, remember that we only live once.
