Irreducibility of Severi varieties on toric surfaces

I will report on an ongoing project with Xiang He and Ilya Tyomkin, in which we study the geometry of Severi varieties on toric surfaces using tropical methods. We focus on the question of irreducibility, but time permitting I will also mention some other applications we are currently exploring.
