What is REMoTIon?

REMoTIon (REsonant Metamaterials for Train-Induced Ground Vibration Mitigation) project has received funding under the HORIZON-MSCA-PF-2022-01-01 call from the European Commission, grant agreement no. 101106600. The project aims to develop an innovative Compact Locally Resonant Wave Barrier (CRWB) made of an array of Wave Impeding Blocks (WIBs), based on metamaterial principles, to mitigate railway-induced ground vibrations without requiring structural interventions to existing railway infrastructures.
Conventional countermeasures, such as open or infilled trenches and pile barriers, typically demand large geometries, limiting their practical installation in dense urban environments. By exploiting locally resonant metamaterials, the project will design, fabricate, and test a prototype barrier with realistic dimensions suitable for engineering implementation, especially in city centres.
The research programme of the REMoTIon project combines analytical modelling, numerical optimization, and experimental validation. Analytical design will be based on dispersion analysis of the barrier; numerical design will employ a mixed wave finite element formulation coupled with machine learning-based optimization; and experimental testing will evaluate the performance of the full-scale or reduced-scale CRWB prototype.
