Bharata natyam is a southern Indian dance form whose repertoire draws on Hindu mythology and epic. Described in classical texts and attested in the bas-reliefs of temples, in the twentieth century this art has undergone profound transformations and has integrated the suggestions of the contemporary. In the performance-lecture we are led to a progressive understanding of the gestural vocabulary of this choreographic art, both through the explanation of facial expressions and mudras (hand movements and positions) and through the narration of the plots of the choreographies. An artistic form of complex deciphering is thus made accessible to an audience that will be able to appreciate its technical characteristics, expressive peculiarities and the ability to vividly narrate the events of human beings and gods.
