Back to the Roots? Return Migrations, Citizenship, and Identity between Brazil and Italy, 1992-2025

The research group aim to explore with this project contemporary migrations from Brazil to Italy in relation to historical Italian emigration to Brazil, highlighting patterns of continuity and transformation. It investigates how descendants of Italian migrants negotiate identities, citizenship rights, and a sense of belonging across generations. Particular attention is given to the role of jus sanguinis in shaping mobility and legal status. The project also examines migrant entrepreneurship as a key arena where transnational ties and cultural heritage are mobilized. By combining historical, geographical and sociological approaches, it aims to understand how past migrations inform present-day experiences and opportunities.
