Offshore hybrid energy systems: P2G, P2L and GtP

Development of innovative concepts for offshore energy systems based on the integration of renewable energy exploitation, power to gas (P2G), power to liquid (P2L), and Gas-to-Power (GtP) concepts

Innovative renewable and hybrid energy systems, as P2G, P2L and G2P options, implemented at offshore locations, would offer the opportunity to overcome challenges of both renewable and oil & gas sectors by different strategies. The chemical conversion of renewable power into gas and liquid synthetic fuels (P2G and P2L) at offshore oil & gas facilities allows to ease storage and transportation of renewable energy from remote areas and to create new opportunities for aging offshore structures. Gas turbine energy balancing systems coupled with renewable plants in G2P offshore projects offer the advantages of improving the dispatchability of renewable power injected into the grid and of valorizing untapped gas resources.

The activities carried out in this research area are aimed at:

  • Development of tools and models for the analysis of offshore hybrid energy systems from the point of view of thermodynamic, economic, environmental impact, and inherent safety assessment
  • Development of decision-making tools and of a portfolio of novel methodologies based on multi-criteria indicators for the sustainability and safety performance comparison of alternative P2G, P2L and G2P offshore hybrid energy options
  • Development of sustainability-based methodologies and tools aimed at supporting the design of renewable and hybrid offshore energy systems including site-specific factors
  • Analysis of specific concepts and case-studies addressing the integrated exploitation of renewable energy sources in offshore locations

Research and Industrial Projects on this topic address:

  • Renewable power generation based on offshore energy platforms in the Adriatic sea
  • Conversion of off-shore platforms to multiple eco-sustainable uses
