Energy transition and decarbonization of industrial processes

Analysis of decarbonization opportunities and conceptual design of specific solutions for the reduction of greenhouse emissions in specific industrial sectors

The ambitious objectives set by the European Green Deal press toward the identification and implementation of decarbonization strategies in all industrial sectors. However, differences in the technological maturity, energy efficiency and overall sustainability of technological options available for process decarbonization are present. The changing horizon of energy production and transport as well as the progressive penetration of energy vectors add complexity to the energy transition framework. Tools for the identification and assessment of strategies and concepts proposed for decarbonization and emission reduction, also including regional and site-specific factors, are crucial to support the decision making process.

The activities carried out in this research area are aimed at:

  • Development of decision-making support tools addressing the assessment of the technological maturity and the overall sustainability of decarbonization technological options
  • Identification and assessment of alternative options for process decarbonization in the chemical and process industry
  • Development of support tools for the definition of local and regional roadmaps for the decarbonization and reduction of greenhouse gas emission

Projects on this topic address:

  • Innovation in process design of polymerization and chemical recycle technologies
  • Definition of the techno-economic framework for the decarbonization of the north-Adriatic region
