At the end of the 19th century, an unprecedented collection of Hebrew manuscripts was discovered in the Ben Ezra Synagogue in the Fustat district of Cairo: the Cairo Genizah. This introductory course explores the extraordinary variety of recovered texts—biblical testimonies, autographs of poets, philosophers, authoritative and charismatic figures, Rabbanites and Karaites, poetic and mystical works, magical texts, and the everyday documents of men and women—which reveal a vivid and surprising cross-section of a prosperous, sophisticated, and complex Mediterranean civilization within the medieval context of Arab-Jewish relations and ties.

The lectures (delivered in italian) will be held every Tuesday, 6:00-8:00 PM, from October 28 to December 2, 2025.

Speakers: Emma Abate and Roberta Tonnarelli.
