Hardware equipment

The Experimental Lab has six workstations, five All-in-One desktop PCs (three macOS and two Windows) and a laptop connected to a projector and screen. The Lab is equipped with a Tobii Pro Eye-Tracker, connected to a laptop configured for eye-tracking experiments with Tobii Pro Lab Full Edition and E-Prime. In addition, it has a multi-function printer, a complete audio-visual kit (microphone, recorders, camera, headphones), a Smart Kapp multimedia board, and Chronos for e-Prime.

Software and licenses

The Lab's workstations are equipped with the most advanced software and tools for the analysis of linguistic and textual data. The Lab has also acquired licenses for the consultation of resources and databases. Below is a list of the software and licenses available at the Experimental Lab.

Adobe Creative

A set of applications and services from Adobe Inc. that gives subscribers access to a collection of software used for text editing, graphic design, video editing, web development, photography, along with a set of mobile applications and also some optional cloud services.

Aegisub

A subtitle editing software, and one of the main tools of fansubbing.

Anaconda

A distribution of the Python and R programming languages for scientific computing (data science, machine learning, data processing, predictive analytics, etc.), that aims to simplify package management and deployment.

AntConc

A multi-platform and multi-purpose corpus analysis toolkit.

Atlas.ti

A workbench for the qualitative analysis of large quantities of textual, graphical, audio and video data.

Audacity

An audio editor and recording application software.

Dragon Professional

A software for automatic speech recognition. The version owned by the Laboratory supports English and Italian.

ELAN

A transcription and annotation tool for audio and video recordings.

E-Prime

A comprehensive stimulus presentation software useful for designing experiments in the field of behavioural research and cognitive linguistics.

Ethnologue

The Experimental Lab allows full access to Ethnologue to all users of the University of Bologna (via Proxy). Ethnologue is an observatory of the languages of the world, which lists all the recognized languages, provides demographic, socio-political and historical information, statistical data based on geographical areas, interactive maps.

IBM SPSS Statistics

A statistical software suite developed by IBM for data management, advanced analytics, multivariate analysis, and business intelligence.

MAXQDA

A software designed for computer-assisted, qualitative, qualitative and mixed methods research. It is useful to organize, classify and analyze, text and multimedia data.

Microsoft Office 2016

A family of client software, server software, and services for office productivity.

Multimodal Analysis Video

Interactive software for annotation and analysis of videos.

Multimodal Analysis Image

A software package for analyzing images and teaching and learning about multimodal texts.

Orange

An open-source data visualization, machine learning and data mining toolkit.

Oxygen XML Editor

A multi-platform XML editor, XSLT/XQuery debugger and profiler with Unicode support.

NVivo

A qualitative data analysis computer software package that helps qualitative researchers to organize, analyze and find insights in unstructured or qualitative data like interviews, open-ended survey responses, journal articles, social media and web content.

Praat

A software package for speech analysis in phonetics. The program supports speech synthesis, including articulatory synthesis.

PsychoPy

A free cross-platform package written in Python allowing researchers to run a wide range of experiments in the behavioral sciences.

Qualtrics

A software for designing, sending and processing professional surveys, with advanced tools for qualitative and quantitative analysis.

R

R is a programming language for statistical computing and graphics supported by the R Core Team and the R Foundation for Statistical Computing.

RStudio

RStudio is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for R, a programming language for statistical computing and graphics.

SDL Trados

A computer-assisted translation software suite.

SDL Multi Term

A terminology management tool providing one solution to store and manage multilingual terminology.

SketchEngine

The Experimental Lab is purchasing a multi-year license to provide full access to SketchEngine for all users at the University of Bologna beginning April 1, 2022. SketchEngine contains 603 ready-to-use corpora in 97 languages, as well as a sophisticated query system. Its algorithms analyze authentic texts of billions of words (text corpora) to instantly identify what is frequent or typical in a language and what is rare, unusual, or emergent. It is also designed for text analysis or text mining applications.

Survey Monkey

A software for designing, sending and processing professional surveys, with advanced tools for qualitative and quantitative analysis.

WaveSurfer

An audio editor widely used for studies of acoustic phonetics.

WebAnno

A general purpose web-based annotation tool for a wide range of linguistic annotations including various layers of morphological, syntactical, and semantic annotations, as well as custom annotations. Multiple and simultaneous annotation projects can be conducted with this software.

Zotero

A free and open-source reference management software for bibliographic data and other research-related materials.
