We use fine-grained ethnographic research to assess how (and whether) impact investing can help to bring about the radical transitions and systems change that can lead to greater sustainability.

Rather than focusing on specific sets of stakeholders in their respective worlds (e.g. corporate finance; development brokers; sustainability scientists; target beneficiaries), IMPACT HAU explores how bonds produce relationships between these worlds, opening windows of insight into processes of cultural and moral translation.

  1. Which different actors are brought together through impact bonds and what kind of relationships do bonds produce between them?
  2. How are different actors’ visions of sustainability encoded and enacted through impact bonds?
  3. To what extent is finance amenable to contributing towards social and environmental sustainability?
