The Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna, within the framework of the Jean Monnet Module “EULA – EU Law for Algorithm”, in collaboration with Curtin Law School, Curtin University, are honoured to announce the Call for Papers for the forthcoming International Conference “Law, Technology and Labour”, to be held in Bertinoro (Italy) from 30th June through 1st July 2022.

The conference is aimed at promoting an international debate on the impact of technology and algorithms in peoples’ lives in the fields of labour law, private law, public law and legal studies at large. The organising committee welcomes abstract submissions consistent with the rationale and goals of the conference. Technology and algorithmic decision-making are impacting our lives in numerous ways, including judgements on individuals’ future perspectives. This has led to increasing concerns about the fact that artificial intelligence, based on the combination of machine learning and large data sets, might allow those who use such techniques to exercise their power in ways that law should prohibit or, at least, disfavour. Over the last few years, legal scholars have dedicated a great deal of attention to the impact of algorithms on the exercise of human rights and the possible policy options for the governance of algorithmic transparency and accountability. At the same time, as the use of technology in peoples’ lives is increasing, so too are concerns relating to its legal externalities. From a labour law perspective, the impact of algorithms and technology on workers’ conditions and within the workplace are changing the employment paradigm – particularly the way in which jobs or services are requested and performed. The paradigm has introduced new dynamics for consideration such as platforms and software. Similarly, technology has had a significant impact on health care provision, especially during the pandemic, which is bound to grow in the future.

The International Conference “Law, Technology and Labour” is intended to reach out to legal scholars from different legal fields to discuss and deliberate upon these topics and issues from a multidisciplinary perspective. It is organized in different thematic tracks and sessions with invited Keynote Speakers and the respondents to this Call for Papers.

Selected papers presented during the two-day Conference will be reviewed for a forthcoming publication of the Conference book.
