System and Management solutions for the bio-economy (BIOREFER)

This project area provides system and management solutions for the bio-economy and the green economy.

System and management solutions are developed for the use of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources and waste streams into value added products, such as food, feed, bio-based products and bioenergy.

The following activities are included in this project area:

  • supporting biobased product certifications such as ECOLABEL and EPD;
  • assessing greenhouse gases savings according to the Dir. 2009/28/EC;
  • assessing the life cycle to study environmental, economic and social performances;
  • performing techno-economic analysis of treatment technologies;
  • providing knowledge to the transition of large systems to low-carbon, resource efficient, and socially inclusive ones;
  • performing system analysis and assessing the socio-economic impact of novel product systems in the bioeconomy;
  • system dynamics modelling to assess the Indirect Land Use Change risk (SydILUC);
  • biomass availability assessment;
  • bare soils detection.

The ultimate goal of this area is to promote the renaissance of industrial production in the field of the bioeconomy.

This area has been conceived as a one stop shop and competence center for R&D, training and consultancy which can benefit from a high level network of partners. BIOREFER addresses specific needs, such as the need of a company and broader systems, such as productive districts, specifically petrochemicals. BIOREFER is capable to provide many specialized knowledge and consultancy skill to address many needs through one contract.
