This session brings together university rectors and city mayors to reflect on the evolving collaboration between higher education institutions and municipalities, as outlined in the Poitiers Declaration. Since its launch in 2016, the Declaration has provided a vital framework for structured partnerships between Coimbra Group universities and their local governments, emphasizing shared responsibilities in fostering urban, cultural, and social development.
The university-city alliance is increasingly relevant, not only for shaping inclusive and sustainable local policies, but also for amplifying the impact of European and global strategies at the grassroots level. As universities take on expanded roles in social responsibility, their cooperation with cities becomes a key lever for community engagement, societal innovation and environmental resilience, in addition to their traditional contribution to economic development and common good.
This session aims to critically assess some of the main trends in university-city cooperation and explore new pathways for growth—sharing concrete experiences, innovative practices, and long-term, at the same time as stimulating further creative thinking between both parties involved. In a changing world, these insights will help identify future models of joint action, serving as inspiration for other cities and universities in the Coimbra Group and beyond. They will also contribute to revisit and consolidate the strategic value of the Poitiers Declaration in addressing both local challenges and global aspirations.
