The 2021 military coup in Myanmar shattered the country’s higher education system. Students and academics quickly became one of the driving forces of the resistance movement—known as the Spring Revolution—and many were forced into exile. Abroad, they sought ways to “not waste the crisis”, using higher education as a tool to actively contribute to the ongoing struggle against authoritarianism. This conversation begins with the voices of displaced Myanmar students, opening space for critical reflection on the role of higher education in contexts of displacement—and on how universities can foster conversations around resistance and belonging.
