What is the areUsafe project about?

areUsafe? (Are Universities Safe Spaces?) delves into what happens when people and students forced to migrate (e.g., due to conflicts, political repression, or natural disasters) reach or attempt to reach new higher education (HE) spaces.

Displaced people seeking to establish themselves in a new setting must confront numerous restrictions. What about their HE needs and experiences? What about universities as one of these protected spaces? Are universities safe spaces?

The topic of HE access and participation in contexts of displacement has been neglected in both scholarship and by policymakers for decades. Therefore, focusing on South and Southeast Asia, this project aims to collect qualitative data on displaced people's HE journeys through multi-sited ethnography to contribute to the academic and policy debate.
