Emergency Initiative for the Protection of Refugees and Population at Risk of Displacement in the Area C of the West Bank and in East Jerusalem

4 - Quality education; Teaching Projects

The Department of Educational Sciences of the University of Bologna has been committed for years to supporting processes of social and educational inclusion in Palestine. In the context of one of the emergency projects financed by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency, in particular, a group of professors and researchers of the Department is working on the educational part contained in the "Emergency Initiative for the Protection of Refugees and Population at Risk of displacement in Area C of the West Bank and East Jerusalem ". The action of the Alma Mater focuses on technical assistance to the representatives of the Ministry of Education and University, on the themes of inclusive education and on psychosocial support in emergency situations. The project, which will last seven months, is carried out by the GVC NGOs of Bologna and EducAid in Rimini and aims to strengthen the resilience of the communities involved with material, psychosocial and advocacy support actions. Through an integrated and participatory protection approach, the intervention aims to help prevent and mitigate the negative effects deriving from coercion and human rights violations perpetrated, albeit with different levels of intensity, in the Palestinian territories.

Specifically, the activity of Alma Mater focuses on school-age minors, linking the learning of new knowledge with the development of life skills useful for individual and group growth. In other words, in a context that sees children particularly vulnerable and exposed, the attempt is to operate a resilience and empowerment intervention: an innovative teaching-learning process that is able to be therapeutic and bearer of growth .

With this objective the Alma Mater will carry out seminar activities with the representatives of the Ministry of Education and the Palestinian University in order to share with them the methodological proposal both from the theoretical point of view and in its operational-didactic application. A "Index for Inclusion and Empowerment" will then be developed: a tool designed to monitor school activities and verify their effectiveness in terms of resilience and inclusion. The Index has already been applied in a first experimentation, which laid the foundations for launching a broader applied research process within the country's educational system in the coming months. Among other activities of the project, the University of Bologna's group of experts also promoted a conference on "Inclusive Education as a Tool for PsychoSocial Support", during which the Index for Inclusion and Empowerment was presented to the national community and international body committed to supporting processes of social and educational inclusion. An event attended, among others, by the Minister and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and University, as well as representatives of the most important international organizations (UNICEF, UNRWA, UNESCO, World Bank).

The project is currently in its final phase, and will continue in the coming months with a new intervention, in continuity with what has been achieved so far and already approved, once again, by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency.
