UrbanFarm2020: Redesigning the places of food

The increasing of urban population is leading to re-design and re-place centres of food production in order to make cities more sustainable and to foster the creation of new economies. To boost this trend, the Universities of Bologna and Florence organize the Student Challenge, UrbanFarm2020. The challenge is set: 3 months of time to redesign 3 locations, having a look at the 3 spheres of sustainability.

THE CHALLENGE

Multidisciplinary student teams from the Faculties of Agriculture, Biology, Architecture, Design, Economics, Engineering and Social Sciences, are invited to join the challenge and design innovative urban agriculture systems that integrate the best architectural and technological innovations for food production in urban environments. Their projects will be based on existing vacant spaces in three cities, characterized by different peculiarities. Their design should have a strong and entrepreneurial connotation, promoting the generation of new forms of employment for disadvantaged users.

The competition is open to student teams from all over the world, and teams may comprise students from different universities and universities of applied sciences.

The challenge is structured in three steps:

  • Round 1: Deadline 1 December 2019, Submission of abstract and 1st video. The deadline has been extended to 3 December 2019.
  • Round 2: Deadline 18 January 2020, Submission full project + proof of concept + 2nd video.
  • Grand Finale: 19-20 February 2020, Designers market and pitches.

 

ONLINE VOTING

Online voting will be available on the challenge website from February, 1st 2020 to February, 15th 2020. 5 points will be attributed to the team with the most voted video. The results of the online voting procedure will be published on February, 16th 2020 on the challenge website.

FINAL BATTLE

Adding up the points gained during Round 1, Round 2, online voting, designers market and pitches, three teams will be selected. These 3 teams (one per each location) will access the final battle, a dueling debate during which the teams will answer another set of questions from the international jury. Finally, the jury, evaluating the answers provided will decide the final ranking.

THE AWARDS 

  • The total jackpot of the challenge is € 7500, and will be divided into three prizes as described below:
  • First Prize: 4000€;
  • Second Prize: 2500€
  • Third Prize: 1000€
