RISE - Roma Inclusive School Experiences

RESEARCH PROJECT

The RISE project, funded by the European program for justice Rights, Equality and Citizenship, focuses on the issue of non-discrimination and Roma integration.

The right to education for Roma children continues to be seriously challenged throughout the European Union. Low levels of education and widespread illiteracy are the main obstacles preventing Roma communities from benefiting from social inclusion, equitable access to the labor market and active participation in the public life of the Countries where they live.

The school attendance of Roma children and adolescents and the outcomes of their training course, however, also depend on educational strategies and teaching models used in schools: these can promote or discourage success and inclusion in schools. Precisely for this reason, the objectives of the RISE project are aimed at the construction of an inclusive school model which, starting from Roma children, will become a resource for all pupils, starting from the assumption that inclusion is achieved by working with the whole class in where Roma / Sinti children are included and supporting teachers in adopting participatory teaching methods.

The main tool is action research. Teachers, managers, social workers, educators, together with parents and Roma and non-Roma students, are the main interlocutors and creators. The project is implemented through a series of consequential and fundamental steps, distributed over 5 workshops.

The project, started in January 2018, will last 24 months and involves three European countries: Italy, Slovenia and Portugal.

The project foresees the following activities:

- Training course for teachers and social workers focused on the following issues: education methodologies (cooperative learning, learning by doing, etc.), fight against all forms of discrimination, intercultural pedagogy and History of the Roma community;

- Didactic workshops for all the children of the classes involved. The workshops are focused on social skills, participation and know-how;

- Workshops for the students of the classes involved on the use of stop motion techniques for realizing a storytelling video on issues related to interculture, prejudices and gender discrimination;

- Exchange and sharing of good practices towards the development of an inclusive education model.
